Hula hooping is known to be a fantastic way to tone that troublesome tummy area, but there are many other health benefits that can be gained from spinning the humble hula hoop! Calorie burning, improved strength and coordination, as well as the undeniable enjoyment factor, to name a few.
At HulaFit® we combine tried and tested fitness techniques with hip shaking hula hoops to give you a highly effective, but most of all FUN, full body cardio workout. Our exercises are easy to follow, combining cardio, dance, toning & combat exercises. These exercises help you to improve overall strength, coordination, balance and cardio fitness, with options to suit all fitness levels.
Some people come for an intense abdominal and cardio workout, some come for the first time just hoping to learn how to keep a hula hoop spinning. Others are looking to add a fun alternative to their regular fitness programme. Our goal is for you to leave class feeling positive, happy and like you had good time on top of doing a great workout!

CALORIE BURN
Hula hooping has been proven to burn anything from 7 calories a minute upwards! The American Council of Exercise (ACE) has tested that hula hooping for 30 minutes can burn approximately 210kcal. Some practitioners believe you burn up to 100 calories every 10 minutes!
At HulaFit® we aim to hoop you hard, with big hula hoops and rigorous cardio workouts. We expect to help you burn anything from 400-600kcal in one hour-long session. Remember, the harder your work, the more you burn…so, spin steady, spin fast, and you will get a mega calorie blast! Burning calories increases the chances of reducing body fat and many can experience rapid weight loss with regular and consistent practice. Once the body balances out to a maintenance weight, hula hooping becomes an effective and healthy upkeep workout, rather than a weight-loss activity.
Coordination
At a HulaFit® class you will be encouraged to join in with various routines that will challenge your coordination and motor-skills. You will jog, jump, squat and spin around, as well as hold balance positions whilst continuing to hula hoop. You will learn to hula hoop on various parts of your body and will be constantly challenged to use your hands and your feet throughout the class. All of the elements of the HulaFit® workout will encourage you to engage your brain as well as your body, building new neural pathways and thereby helping to improve your coordination and refine your motor skills! A HulaFit® workout can also help to enhance and develop your balance, posture and flexibility.
STRENGTH
Building muscle is not the same as being a body builder! Muscle strength is vital in maintaining a healthy body, avoiding injuries and makes everyday activities easier – and HulaFit® can help! Hula hooping requires constant push-pull contractions in your core muscles, the abdominals and the obliques, as well as in the glutes and thighs. Add in the variety of movements we do in class and you’re recruiting and strengthening muscles from all the major muscle groups! Combining the added resistance of heavy hoops (up to 1kg) and aerobic exercises, a HulaFit® class can assist in sculpting, reshaping and toning all the right places.
CORE
Learning how to hula hoop, and practising regularly at a HulaFit® class, is an excellent way to target and train your abdominal muscles, slim your waist and sculpt your stomach. At HulaFit we teach the best technique on how to hula hoop and engage your core to ensure you’re effectively targeting these muscles. Key in everyday life; a strong core stabilizes the spine, protecting it from injuries, helps prevent lower back pain and improves posture and form during a workout.
