So you’ve made the fantastic decision to take up hula hooping and have booked your first HulaFit class! There are so many benefits to hula hooping for both your physical & your mental health. Feeling a bit nervous before your first class? You’re not alone. It’s totally normal to feel a bit anxious before starting something new. We’re here to help! In this blog we’ll break down exactly what to expect in your first HulaFit class so you can arrive prepared and ready to have some hula fun.
First class? Let’s do this!
10 Minutes before class
Not sure what to wear? Check out our top tips on what to wear when hula hooping.
Try to arrive 10 minutes early so you can check in with your instructor & get settled in. Expect a warm welcome as our instructor gets you sorted with a hula hoop and walks you through what to expect during your first class. We provide the hoops for you & you’ll be given one of our trademark HulaFit Fitness Hoops. These are large, slightly weighted hoops which make it easier to keep the hoop spinning around your waist, perfect for beginners! We even have different size hoops available for different body sizes which our instructors will help you with – one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to hula hooping!
This is a great time to let your instructor know if you have any niggles or injuries so they can help tailor your workout.
Grab your water bottle, find a space and say hi to your neighbour! Our classes are very interactive and you’ll find HulaFit communities are full of friendly, supportive hoopers, always ready for a giggle.
Learn the FUNdamentals
We’ll break out the beats and start with a warm up routine to prepare your body for exercise. We start the class teaching you how to Hula Hoop, with top tips on good form & proper technique, & show you ways you can recover a falling hoop. We then give you a little time to practise & get into the swing of things.
It can take a few weeks to really master the basics & keep that hoop spinning on your waist and that’s absolutely normal. Just like learning any new skill, it takes practice and time to improve, and hula hooping is no different. It usually takes about 3 sessions to get that hoop spinning, practise your technique & recognise all the moves so stick with it. You’ve got to jump in and give that hoop a spin, then keep practising!
Remember; It’s all about ‘feel good fun’, not perfection, so if you feel that hoop falling down, don’t worry! Pick it up, have a giggle with your neighbour & give that hoop another spin when you’re ready. Our HulaFit classes are a fun and safe space to work out, get the giggles and drop the hoop.
Time to hoop, sweat and smile
Our instructor will then lead you through the main workout, combining tried & tested full body exercises with hip shakin’ hula! Expect to get sweaty and have a right laugh.
Our exercises are easy to follow, combining dance, cardio, toning & combat exercises to give you a full body workout, helping you improve overall strength, coordination, balance and cardio fitness. We give a variety of options to suit all fitness levels, so you can really work to your own needs. Don’t forget to hydrate and take rest breaks when you need to.
We love to finish our classes with a bit of fun, be that a game, a fun dance or learning a new trick you can do with a hula hoop; you can expect to learn something a bit different in every class!
The Post Hoop Glow
The end of class comes around so quickly because you’ve just been having too much fun! Hooping is feel-good fitness at its finest. There are so many different types of exercise to improve fitness, coordination and strength. But we’re still yet to find anything that feels as fun as hooping.
We’ll say farewell until next week and you’ll head out with a smile on your face, chatting to some new hoopy friends from class. You’re guaranteed to meet a friendly bunch of people as well as learning a fab new skill.
And if it’s not working for you straight away, don’t beat yourself up. In the almighty words of Take That – just have a little patience. But here’s a warning: it’s addictive!
We hope this has helped to calm your nerves. Now you know exactly what to expect in your first HulaFit class. If you haven’t already, check out our classes or even book an online class. This way, you can learn to hoop and get valuable feedback from our instructors to help you on your way.
