What’s it like as a HulaFit Instructor? We love to help you get to know some of our brilliant core crew a little better. This month, we caught up with the fabulous Kim, who teaches HulaFit in Berkshire. Here’s what she has to say…
When was the first time you picked up a hula hoop?
10 years ago, I saw a beautiful lady hooping whilst 9 months pregnant and she absolutely amazed me (Bee Varga, she has definitely been my inspiration). After this, I went to a class at a spa and purchased my first hoop. I was so bad at it to start with! I began to practice in front of the TV daily and it’s progressed from there. I did my HulaFit training in Nov 2021, so I have been teaching classes over a year now.
What made you decide to take the training?
I have an online health and wellness business and a huge passion for hula hooping so thought the two went well together. I have struggled with sticking to exercise personally, so felt there was a need for a different form of exercise in my local area. I am not a gym goer, but love to be outside and walk. One of my favourite things about teaching HulaFit is that I can take my classes outside in the summer months, which I love.
How did you find the training experience?
I loved the training! It was all online, which was really convenient. Carla was friendly, easygoing and professional. She gave us so much information and guidance along the way. It was structured in a way that even being a busy Mum of four I managed to fit it all in.
When did you launch your HulaFit classes?
I started my classes in January 2022. I offered three classes a week, with two classes in one evening as I had lots of interest and people were keen to try this new way to exercise.
A year on, I now teach seven face-to-face classes per week. I teach both mornings and evenings across Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Wiltshire. It’s great! I’ve helped to spread the love of hooping into different areas. I get asked to do more classes elsewhere, but there is only one of me!
What’s your favourite thing about teaching HulaFit?
There are a few! I love seeing people achieve learning a new skill, especially those who didn’t believe they would ever hoop. It makes me smile to watch them realise they have finally got the hang of it.
We all have a laugh together, and it has made exercise fun. I have found people have stuck to regular classes because they look forward to the classes and want to come each week and because they enjoy it so much!
I love the community hula hooping creates. We have chats and do fun sessions every now and then. Even my participants’ children come along and run around outside in the summer months.
For me personally, it totally lifts my mood and makes me switch off from anything else, so I also feel amazing after each class.
What do you love about being part of the HulaFit family?
It’s so supportive, any questions we have or information we need, all the other HulaFit instructors are there to help and offer support, which is a huge help when you are starting out.
I have also had the pleasure of presenting at FitJam with three of the HulaFit instructors. We had such an amazing time and loved showing everyone what HulaFit was about. Seeing so many happy faces smiling back at you was brilliant!
Has this inspired you to join our #CoreCrew? We’re always on the lookout for friendly would-be instructors who want to bring alternative fitness, hula hoops and a load of fun to their local community. Find out more about instructor training here.
